Hidden behind the busy Kantstraße in Berlin, Wilmina occupies a former women’s prison that has been carefully transformed by Grüntuch Ernst Architects. The original structure was not erased, but opened up and reinterpreted. Former cells became light filled rooms, old doors were preserved and sealed courtyards were turned into gardens.

Wilmina is also a family affair. Almut and Armand developed the project together, while their son Gordian became closely involved in shaping and running the house. What began as an architectural transformation has grown into something much more personal, a place that continues to evolve through the family and the people working within it.

Over time, the ensemble continued to grow. A new building was added beside the historic complex, introducing spacious Wilmina Apartments connected to the hotel through the gardens, together with the LOTTA day bar. The extension opened the idea of Wilmina to longer stays and a different way of living within the same world.

The same personal approach can be found in the smaller details. Next to the reception is Wilmina Brot, the house’s own bakery, making fresh sourdough bread and pastries for guests and the surrounding neighbourhood.

What makes Wilmina interesting is not only the transformation of a former prison, but the fact that the project keeps evolving. Architecture, hospitality, food and family all continue to shape what the place is becoming.
